Summary

There are many companies in the business of making building models for specific product manufacturers and specific design and construction software applications. The duplication of effort as each of these companies create models for all manufacturers and all software products is beginning to overwhelm the ability of that market segment to sustain their efforts. In addition, clients currently receiving electronic product information have no guarantee that the information required to specify, operate, and maintain this equipment is available. The 08-Dec-2011 presentation of progress on the Specifiers Properties information exchange project demonstrated that the development of non-proprietary product templates for product data and geometry is no longer a technical question.

Presenters from industry, academia, and government demonstrated the need and willingness to engage to create open-standard product and geometry templates through the procedure introduced by the Construction Specifications Institute. Two of the leading product web-catalog suppliers applauded the effort that would allow their products to transform the currently tedious and difficult effort of product discover and selection.
